An alcoholic woman was caught by locals trying to eat the flesh off her two-year-old daughter after slicing part of her skull open in West Bengal.
Screams of the child were heard by a relative, who rescued her from the clutches of her mother and as the word spread the entire village of Gopalpur gathered to scorn 40-year Pramila, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Toddler Bharati's uncle Dablu was harrified to see her sister-in-law cut the side of her daughter's head and eat her flesh. "It was around noon and I was resting at home when I heard loud cries of Bharati. I ran to check on her but there the scene I saw was beyond shocking," Dablu is quoted as saying by the website.
"Bharati was bleeding profusely as Pramila was eating the flesh of her head. I immediately snatched away Bharati from Pramila and rushed her to Malda Medical College and Hospital where she is admitted to ICU," he added.
Angry villagers tied Pramila with a rope and beat her after the news of her attacking the child spread. Pramila confessed her actions to the gathered people at the spot.
Her sister-in-law, Mamta, informed the police, who arrived to save Pramila from the angry crowd and detained her. The accused is set to appear in a court in Gopalpur.
Pramila, who has three kids, has not seen her husband since a year after he went to Delhi to pick up a labourer's job.
